We visited this restaurant for an early dinner after work. I developed a liking for Mexican food whilst visiting America and a friend recommended we should try the Mod-Mex offerings at the Tavern Company.

The restaurant was quiet in the early evening. We were greeted at the door, shown to a booth and offered drinks.

There is a strong emphasis on wood in the decor. One side has an impressive bar and the centre of the room is divided with wooden partitions into older style dining booths that are tall enough to give the diner privacy. We liked it.

The wine and drinks list is extensive. As I was going Mexican I ordered a Corona whilst my friend had a glass of red wine.

There is a comprehensive menu that has a wide selection of Mexican and American style dishes. Although tempted we chose to forgo the starters and head straight for the good stuff.

I ordered Carne Con Chile Colorado with a side order of refried beans.
It was a nice chilli and not too hot but a bottle of pepper sauce was at hand if I wished to spice it up. The refried beans weren’t very Mexican, but tasty all the same. My companion had a Gourmet Burger, which comes with mozzarella, onions, mushroom, sour cream and fries (no French fries in this Mod-Mex), making an attractive plate of U.S. style food.

We had carrot cake and cheese cake for pudding; both were light and well made.

The service was friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our early evening visit. The bill was a reasonable £30.

Yes, this is worth another visit to try the steaks.
