This Indian restaurant is close to a landmark locally known as ‘The Pelican lights’, a junction with close proximity to the pub of the same name. It was called Bollywood in a previous life and is now re-opened, brightly and freshly decorated, as the Shandaar.
We were having a family gathering of eight people on a Saturday night and had booked a table, to which we were taken immediately upon our arrival. The restaurant was quite busy and had a pleasant buzz about it.
We had a pile of poppadoms and ordered a selection of Indian and European beers to get us started whilst we chose from the menu. The wine list was extensive and reasonably priced.
The menu is comprehensive and there is something there for all tastes, whether your preference is for meat, fish or chicken and you may choose how hot or spicy you would like your dish cooked.
I quickly spotted one of my favourites on the starter list; Prawn Puree, a delicious combination of prawns in a sweet, spicy sauce wrapped in an Indian style pancake. The others chose from a decent variety of Tandoori and spicy starters.
We all chose different main courses with a selection of naan breads and pilau rice. So we could all enjoy the different flavours we agreed to place the complete order in the middle of the table and get stuck in. What a good decision this was. I really enjoyed sampling all of those different flavours.
After we were all sated there was still a fair of main course left. Our helpful waiter ‘doggy bagged’ this for us to take home.
The Shandaar does a full takeaway service. It also has a Sunday all day grand buffet, where you eat as much as you like for £9.50, children under 12 eat for £5.50.
Will we return?
This is well worth a return visit.
