New Zealand is located in the South Pacific Ocean. There are two main islands, North and South, which added together are only slightly larger than the UK.

North Island is the smaller of the two main islands, yet it is home to approximately two thirds of New Zealand’s population. Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and offers many attractions including a beautiful harbour, waterfronts and yacht marinas. You are never far from the water in Auckland which is perhaps why it is now known as the City of Sails.

Head north from Auckland and you will reach the Bay of Islands. It is a great spot for dolphin and whalewatching.

Head south from Auckland and you will reach Rotorua, a geothermal wonderland with erupting geysers and bubbling mud pools. It is also a great place to learn all about the Maori culture.

New ZealandIf drinking good wine is your passion, then don’t miss out a visit to Hawkes Bay and Martinborough areas. You will find excellent quality B&B’s in these areas where the emphasis is on great food and drink.

Finally down to Wellington, the nation’s capital. It is a city renowned for its arts and culture. The Te Papa Museum is home to the nation’s treasures and well worth a visit. Wellington is also the place to get the ferry that connects the North and the South Islands.

Come back next month to read all about the South Island.
