It was a pleasant Friday evening so we decided to walk into Altrincham for a family meal, with 2 children aged 10 & 11 in tow, heading for one of the ‘family-friendly’ locations near the cinema, but walking down Stamford New Road we noticed that the new Jam Deli was advertising its Opening Night ...

As we lingered to read the notice and caught the aromas of delicious food wafting through the invitingly open door, we all
began to feel very hungry.

The friendly staff invited us in for a look around and we were very impressed with the airy feel  and welcoming décor of the downstairs seating area, as well as the inviting list of dishes on the menu. We also picked up a biog sheet on the Chef, David Sharp, and discovered that he has worked in some of the most prestigious restaurants in the  world—he has even cooked for Bill Clinton & the Blairs!

Jam Deli and Café Bar is a BYO (or Bring Your Own—alcohol that is!), so the fact that Oddbins was just across the road was the clincher! We nipped across and purchased a chilled bottle of  Sauvignon Blanc.

There were a few other diners—the seating area takes around 30 at a time, so the atmosphere was relaxed and calm, with pleasant background music playing.

Our waitress sorted out soft drinks for the children—all priced at a very reasonable 95p, and lots to choose from.

Between  the four of us we pretty much tried everything on the menu! There are 4 each of starters, mains & desserts to choose from, with a vegetarian & fish option in amongst, and the menu changes every week.

Children’s portions are available at a discount, but ours decided they were hungry enough to do justice to an adult sized portion—a bit of a mistake as they were healthy-sized portions. Plus the home-made bread & stuffed olives had also gone down a treat! We all tried each other’s choices and they were all superb.

The lime pickle accompanying the goats cheese parcels was a ‘sublime’  combination apparently! The spinach and lemon soup was delicious, and the beef with caramelised pears, which had been requested as ‘pink’, was found to be pink to perfection. All in all there was really no room for a pudding, so we shared a rhubarb fool—which was  heavenly!

The service was informed and friendly and the food was superb—extremely well cooked, wonderfully combined, and beautifully presented—a real treat. The only downside is that the only evenings that it opens are a Friday and a Saturday. The bill came to £66, which was fantastic value for a 5 Star meal for 4 in Altrincham.

Our Verdict:

Atmosphere 7/10
Service 8/10
Food 10/10!

Will we return?

Definitely! I’ve just seen next week’s menu
and it sounds seriously tempting!
