The House restaurant is situated in the modernised area of Goose Green in the heart of Altrincham. It has tables outside as well as the interior dining area. I believe the chef is also the owner.
We called to have lunch, but did not choose our day very well. This was the day of the ‘A’ Level results and parents and grandparents were treating the successful students to a celebratory meal. For some reason it was mostly young ladies being congratulated. Did the lads not do so well, or are they just not the lunching kind?
It seemed the staff were also taken by surprise. There were just two of them on duty and they were obviously feeling the pressure. Understandably, service was a little slow. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio whilst we studied the menu. When it arrived we were surprised to find that it was a sparkling variety, and it was none the worse for this.
There is a very good lunchtime menu with a nice variety offering two courses for £9.90.
I started with goats cheese and watermelon and my colleague had grilled sardines. Both were very tasty.
For the main course I had a Scottish sirloin steak cooked rare, served with mushrooms, tomatoes and chips. The steak was thick, juicy and perfectly cooked. My partner had seas bass served on spinach with a creamy Noilly Prat sauce. It was nicely
cooked with delicate, subtle flavours.
I opted out of the pudding stakes on this occasion but my colleague ordered Banoffee pie. This is one of her favourites and she praised it highly. As is our wont, we finished with two nice cappuccinos.
The bill came to a very reasonable £43, which is excellent for a quality lunch in Altrincham town centre.
Our Verdict:
Atmosphere 7/10
Service 5/10
Food 8/10
Will we return?
Certainly, but not on an exam results day
