The American Bar and Grill is next to Hale Railway Station where there is easy car parking. It offers an outside seating area, a bar and a mezzanine dining floor.
I have visited here once before on a Saturday lunchtime, but as there was a large children’s party in full flow we decided discretion was the better part of valour, so we drunk our beer and left.
This time it was a weekday lunchtime, so we had an entirely different clientele. We were seated next to a window and as it was a scorching, hot day (remember those?) we watched the ladies of Hale with interest as they went about their shopping..
We had some serious work to do after lunch so my colleague had an orange juice and I had a cold beer.
The menu is indeed Americana. It reminded me somewhat of TGIF, with lots of steaks, burgers and fish on offer for starters and main courses.
I had buffalo chicken wings to start with and found the Louisiana hot sauce they came with to be exactly that; a very hot sauce. My colleague had tempura king prawns which came with a chilli dip. The prawns were large and very tasty. Now these dishes just have to be good for drink sales!
I tried the roadhouse chilli for my main course and although it had a good flavour it was not nearly as hot as the sauce that came with the chicken wings. There is room here for a little pepper trading between these menu items. I also found the chilli a little dry. My colleague had sea bass, which was fresh, flavoursome and well cooked.
The dessert menu has a good selection of American style puddings and it was good to see an English style item, apple crumble, on offer as well.
We shared an American cheesecake for dessert, which was homemade, served with ice cream and fresh cream, and had a lovely flavour.
To finish we had two nice cappuccinos.
The service was good and the staff were helpful. The bill came to £45, which, I am sad to say, is reasonable for Hale.
Will we return?
Yes, I shall try one of their burgers next time.
