Borrello Italian Restuarant

Borrello is situated directly opposite Sale Town Hall, very close to Sale Metrolink station and local parking, so access is easy. We visited here when it first opened and were surprised to learn that it was three years ago. Time flies when you are reviewing restaurants. Borrello is pleasantly decorated, nicely lit, and features attractive wall murals of Italian scenes.

We visited early evening on a Wednesday without a reservation, and found the restaurant already busy. Our coats were taken and we were seated at a nice table at the rear where we could watch the diners in the already half full restaurant. We were quickly furnished with menus, a jug of iced water and a bottle of Italian Sauvignon Blanc.

The à la carte menu has a very good selection of Italian, English and pizza dishes, with fish, meat and chicken. There is something here for everyone, including vegetarians. As ever, we were drawn towards the ‘Specials’ board. There are Midweek Specials on offer, one of which is any starter and choice from the Classic menu, then dessert or coffee; which my friend eventually ordered.

She started with Avocado Gameretti; baby prawns & crabmeat set in avocado and dressed with marie rose sauce. It was both classic and good. I started with a small portion of meatballs with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. Nice, but I thought the meatballs needed a little more seasoning.

My friend ordered Salmon ala crema, the salmon being cooked with white wine, cream and asparagus. The result was excellent. I ordered Fish Medley, an expensive option from the Specials board that came cost £21. It was sea bass, tuna, lemon sole and salmon cooked in garlic, lemon and olive oil. This dish is unusual and very tasty. Both dishes were accompanied by a bowl of seasonal vegetables.

For pudding I had warm chocolate fudge cake and my friend had a pear tart. These were served with a jug of fresh cream. These nicely prepared desserts were a good way to finish off the meal. This was a good meal in a nice restaurant that offers good variety, does fish particularly well and remains close to its Mediterranean roots.

The other customers all seemed to be enjoying themselves and there was a pleasant atmosphere. The service was prompt and friendly. The bill came to £70, including the wine and my expensive main course, providing good value.

Will we return? Yes, the Early Diner is particularly good value.
